A Custom Order – Carnival Earrings

Posted by admin on November 16, 2010 in Blog Rockstar Musings

I don’t usually do custom orders. I’d much rather allow the design process to take me where it goes until I have a finished project. In my whole 6 or 7 years designing I’ve only done three custom orders. The first two didn’t go so well. I had someone to come to me and to tell me that their necklace had broken and could I fix it. I reluctantly agreed. It took me a while to come up with something, and when I did, the person was visibly pissed. She hadn’t given me a picture of the previous necklace, but she expected something close to it based on a pile of beads she handed me. I did my best for free mind you, and she was pissed.

Next, I made a pair for someone I looked up to. When I presented them to her, said she liked the ones I had on. I told her that I had considered giving those to her, and at that she rolled her eyes and accepted what I had made with reservation. Again those were free, and I’ve never seen her wear them.

Well, hopefully this last time will be different. It starting off that way because these are actually a paid order. I’ve sent the images to the client and she loved them. I offered to put a feather on the earring because she was sort of on the fence about whether she wanted it or not.

She’s wearing them to Carnival in Trinidad in March. Here’s a pick of her costume:

So tell me what you think? I’ve already heard from one of my facebook friends that said I needed to capture the spirit of Carnival a bit more with color, so you can tell me what you really think.

BTW- my nine year old does all my photography now as part of her homeschooling photography class. I think she’s doing a brilliant job. She also sketched and brainstormed with me on my design. I am so lucky to have her as my design consultant!

  • I think they’re amazingly gorgeous Brooke, i really do! I love them with the feather. Looking at the picture, i feel like you captured the look, but I’ve never been to Carnival. I love all the loops that dangle though, and they are wonderfully feminine. The feather kicks them up a notch for me…they’d look good going for a soft, breezy look or badass, rocker look too with the feather 🙂

  • Thanks Jennifer. I think what I made matches her outfit pretty well, and I think the feather really rocks it. The person who made that comment has been making it her business to Critique everything I do for the past 13 years or so:) In fairness to her though, she didn’t see the outfit. She just gave an opinion without having the full context.

  • I love both looks Brooke. The loops on these just cascade so beautifully and they accentuate the neck perfectly. I do love the feather one that extra little bit because I can see it in movement at Carnival…just dancing along with the excitement of the event! Great work as always 🙂
