I don’t usually do custom orders. I’d much rather allow the design process to take me where it goes until I have a finished project. In my whole 6 or 7 years designing I’ve only done three custom orders. The first two didn’t go so well. I had someone to come to me and to tell me that their necklace had broken and could I fix it. I reluctantly agreed. It took me a while to come up with something, and when I did, the person was visibly pissed. She hadn’t given me a picture of the previous necklace, but she expected something close to it based on a pile of beads she handed me. I did my best for free mind you, and she was pissed.
Next, I made a pair for someone I looked up to. When I presented them to her, said she liked the ones I had on. I told her that I had considered giving those to her, and at that she rolled her eyes and accepted what I had made with reservation. Again those were free, and I’ve never seen her wear them.
Well, hopefully this last time will be different. It starting off that way because these are actually a paid order. I’ve sent the images to the client and she loved them. I offered to put a feather on the earring because she was sort of on the fence about whether she wanted it or not.
Here’s my interpretation without feathers:

So tell me what you think? I’ve already heard from one of my facebook friends that said I needed to capture the spirit of Carnival a bit more with color, so you can tell me what you really think.
BTW- my nine year old does all my photography now as part of her homeschooling photography class. I think she’s doing a brilliant job. She also sketched and brainstormed with me on my design. I am so lucky to have her as my design consultant!
