BET Awards

Okay, I am officially out of the 18-35 year old category. I’m almost 41 years old, however I just left that category somewhere between last year’s BET awards and this year’s BET award. What evidence do I have? Well, I was totally clueless last night.
I barely recognized those mofos anyone performing. Well, I am exaggerating a bit, I did recognize some of them.
I recognized Deniece Williams. She sang Silly with Monica, and she let Monica wipe the floor up with her. Monica sang notes all up and down Deniece’s back, it was sad to see, especially since she is from my hayday…hmph!
I also recognized that Alicia Keys and that little RatFace, Swizz Beatz, were getting Hip-hop royalty treatment, since they’ve decided to bring a baby into this bull they call a relationship. In BET’s defense they had to give someone the keys to the castle, since Bey & Jay decided not to show. On that same note, since Jay-z didn’t show, Chris Brown was allowed to roam freely about the stage.
Last year it was reported that he was blocked from doing a Michael Jackson tribute by Jay-z. He did the tribute this year and it showed his talent. He cried on the “Man in the Mirror” part, and my 13 year old says to me, “The media will be back on Chris’ side in 5, 4, 3, 2,1.” Guess what she was right. Before I went to bed last night I saw a report of him tearing up doing the tribute.
Janelle Monae, who I’ve mentioned here before was as spitfire as ever. She did part of the Prince tribute, and cut up all over the stage. It was great.

The chick who went after her was boooring, and I don’t know who she is or where they got her from.
Queen Latifah was gorgeous, and no I’m not flirting with her. She looked fabulous. She Looked like she really worked out with that girlfriend of hers to get into shape.
El DeBarge!!! Now there’s something to talk about. He saw Maxwell make a huge comeback by turning out the BET awards a few years ago, so he actually rehearsed to do the show. He was big hit!!! He didn’t come back like Deniece Williams and Melle Mel a few years ago some of the oldie artists forgetting his lyrics and cracking on the notes. The only thing was the youngsters and Taraj P. Hinson kept calling him Chico or twitter and the after party. His pesky baby brother is threatening to mess up his comeback. The problem is that their history and problems are similar. They have both been to prison and they both had drug issues, so people are probably like “yeah James, I mean Bobby RIP, I mean Chico, oops no El was the bomb last night. Somebody in the DeBarge family needs to go to law school, so he can be distinguished from his “pretty-faced, claiming that they did bid” brother.
I am so sorry, I am in rare form today. I think the full moon has got me extra sharp and biting today. I stand by my gossipy stance, hey I’m not always positive. It’s the BET Awards! It’s a tradition for me to cut up a little, at least that’s what I told me 13 year old when she asked me why I am going to bother to watch because I’ll only end up mad. BTW- I didn’t end up mad this year, I am just kind of pride of myself that I’ve finally evolved out of the 18-35 y/o category.
Once again, you’ve done me proud. Your recaps are so much better than the show could ever be. I’ve convinced myself of this and it is why I have yet to find out what channel BET actually comes on with our satellite provider.
So sad to hear about Monica and Deniece Williams though…I had Silly on a 45RPM and sang it more than enough times in my silly youth!
Another reason I’m glad I passed, I can still hear Deniece hitting those notes-beyond the crackle of my 45RPM- in my mind.
Alicia Keys was the topic for discussion here just a few days ago when I came across her Beta site dedicated to women and empowerment…I’ll leave it at that.

LOL. Yup, yup, same here. I still don’t understand why Nicki is so popular, she is such a little clown, as is evident by those damn photos. I was feeling most of the other performances, and pleased to see El do his thang. I love when they have surprises from folks we haven’t seen in a while. I completely lost my shit last year when Maxwell popped back up on the scene. The only real downfall of this years awards, besides Chris, was the fact that Prince didn’t perform. That was really the only reason I tuned in.
Did you say you didn’t know who Patti was, and that you thought she was boring???? Nooooooooooooo… how could you??? I absolutely LOVE her, lol. Granted, she should have sang Do Me, rather than Purple Rain, but man oh man do I love her. Ah well, lol.

The awards didn’t do much for me either and your daughter is sooooooo right about the media letting up on Chris Brown.
